The total area of the site stands at 210,000 square meters, approximately 4.5 times that of the Tokyo Dome. In 1960, the Cabinet decided to develop parts of the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru of the former Edo Castle in in the eastern district of the Imperial Palace as the Imperial Gardens alongside the construction of the Palace. Construction began in 1961 and the gardens were opened to the public in 1968.

You can find nearly 30 varieties of cherry blossom trees in the Imperial Palace East Gardens, including the Amagi Yoshino cherry, Koshino Higan cherry, Weeping cherry, and Yoshino cherry that burst into bloom in springtime. There is also a rose garden, bamboo grove, and orchard garden, as well as many green areas like the Suwa Tea House where you can view bright flowers or Ninomaru Grove where the autumn leaves change color.

  • #
  • You can also take time to relax on one of the benches around the park while admiring the different flowers of the four seasons. The rest areas of Honmaru, Ninomaru, Ote-mon Gate and other spots around the park are perfect for a break in your stroll around these expansive grounds. *The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace will experience temporary closures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please check the official website before visiting to confirm when the gardens will be open.

Hibiya ParkHibiya Park in the middle of the business area lets you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

#

Hibiya Park is just a two minute walk from Subway Hibiya Station or a three minute walk from Kasumigaseki Station. This land belonged to a daimyo lord until the end of the Edo period, then was used as an army training ground in the Meiji period until the city eventually opened it later on as Hibiya Park.

The main symbol of Hibiya Park is a large fountain (30 meters across). Seasonal flowers also burst into bloom year round within its first and second flower beds. The park also contains event spaces such as the Hibiya Public Hall along with large and small concert halls, as well as cultural facilities like the Hibiya Library and Museum. The park plays host to various events throughout the year and is full of attractions and things to enjoy.

  • The park contains many benches in areas such as the fountain plaza, First Flower Garden, and around the Kumogata-ike pond. If you head there around midday, you'll see business people enjoying their lunch outdoors. The park is like a little air pocket within this overwhelmingly urban area where you can take a break in natural surroundings.

HIBIYA MatsumotoroHibiya Matsumotoro in Hibiya Park. Delectable beef curry simmered with care for four whole days

#

Hibiya Matsumotoro is a restaurant just a seven minute walk from Subway Kasumigaseki Station or an eight minute walk from Hibiya Station. It is located on the west side of the large fountain in the center of Hibiya Park. The restaurant opened in 1903 (Meiji 36), the same year that these former military grounds became Hibiya Park. At that time, it was a very fashionable place to be seen sipping coffee and eating curry.

  • #
  • It is this very type of traditional beef curry that the restaurant has developed into a takeout dish. Their curry rice bento (delivery 950 yen/over the counter 850 yen) uses curry roux carefully simmered for four days. This roux, with its sweet and umami flavors of beef and onions, tastes of elegance and nostalgia.
  • The hamburger steak (hambagu) lunch (delivery 1,300 yen/over the counter 1,200 yen) is the perfect midday feast, including a hamburger steak, fried crab claw, fried prawn, potato salad, and a vegetable garnish. The hamburger steak's demiglace sauce is a rich handmade sauce brewed over two whole weeks.
