For travelers from all over the world, choosing souvenirs is one of the most enjoyable parts of their trip. In this special feature, we take you on a tour of the deep souvenir stores scattered throughout Chiyoda City (Chiyoda Ward) to discover unique items that will tickle your spirit of exploration.
The owner of “(Former) Tailor Tsuruya” makes use of the retro atmosphere of the building built in 1928 to produce original goods, and collects and sells old and new goods, books, and old clothes that interest her. The items reminiscent of the Showa period are all full of individuality, and their different tastes from the modern ones are very cute.
Among the popular items at “(Former) Tailor Tsuruya” are pochettes and clasp bags made from fabrics from their tailoring days mixed with new fabrics. The owner told us that Showa-era retro sundries and books introducing Tokyo 30-50 years ago are especially popular among foreign tourists. Also, all items illustrated by Rina Yoshioka, whose retro Showa-era touch is unique, are particularly popular. Why not visit the store to find your own favorites among the "old, new, and specially made things," which is the motto of the “(Former) Tailor Tsuruya”?

Ginza Seiyudo is one of the largest Japanese sword stores in Japan and is located on the second floor of the Tokyo Kotsu Kaikan in Yurakucho. The store always has over 200 swords, tsuba (brim), and samurai armors on display. It made me feel as if I had stepped back in time to the days of the samurai.
Japanese swords are weapons, but can also seen as works of art. If properly cared for, they can be passed down from generation to generation for hundreds to more than a thousand years. A well-preserved sword is so shiny that it looks as if it was made recently, and it is truly surprising to hear that it is several hundred years old.
The beauty of a Japanese sword is determined by the "blade pattern" that appears on the blade, the condition of the sword, the engraving on the blade, the blade pattern, the tsuba, the beautiful sheath, the metal collar that holds the sword inside the sheath, and the decoration on the handle called "menuki". Each Japanese sword has its own story and is very attractive.
If you are considering purchasing a serious sword, please stop by Ginza Seiyudo.
(Note: Japanese swords may be treated as weapons in some countries, so you need to make sure about the laws before you purchase one.

"Maywa Denki" is an artistic unit produced by Novumichi Tosa. In the style of the small and medium-sized enterprises that supported Japan's rapid economic growth in the 1980ies, he developed various nonsense machines and present them at live performances and exhibitions. The instruments and items developed by "Maywa Denki" can be bought at their directly managed store in Akihabara.
The store's most popular products are the cute-looking "Otamatone," the "Rubber Bass," and the slightly unusual instrument called the "SUSHI BEAT. Another attraction of the store is that you can actually pick up and try them in the store before purchasing.
The "Otamatone," an electronic musical instrument in the shape of a musical note, has been introduced on foreign TV programs and video sites, attracting many foreign tourists to the store. The highly unique products make a great gift. The hurdle to make a purchase was much lower than I had imagined, as the store staff introduced all products and demonstrated how to use them in both Japanese and English. So why not visit the Maywa Denki Music Machine Store to see the real thing?
