The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan is located in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, 5-minute walk from Otemachi Station. This is a national museum that exhibits a substantial collection of art and historic materials donated by the Imperial Family to the nation of Japan. You can appreciate valuable cultural properties closely feeling the history back then.
In 1989, His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus and His mother Empress Kojun gifted a substantial collection of art to the nation of Japan that had previously been passed down by the Imperial Family. In 1993, the Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan was established in the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace In order to conserve these works, discover more about them through research, and make them accessible to the public.
Since 2019, expansion construction was started and in 2023, administration and operation were transferred from the Imperial Household Agency to National Institutes for Cultural Heritage, then they started to open to the public partly as The Museum of the Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan. A full reopening is planned for 2026.
The museum's collection includes Japanese and other oriental fine arts and crafts, as well as masterpieces from a wide range of periods and regions. Highlights include poetry anthologies from Heian period calligraphy, Detcho-bon Wakan-roueisyu, national treasure Kanazawa-bon Man-you-syu. From Kamakura period, national treasure Kasugagongen-genkie, illustrated handscrolls, the Folding Screens Karajisihizu by KANO Eitoku. As for modern works, there are valuable art works representing each era, by SHIMOMURA Kanzan, YOKOYAMA Taikan, NAMIKAWA Yasuyuki, the sculptor TAKAMURA Koun and so on.
