This earth-paved bridge crosses Hamaguri-bori and Nijubashi-bori moats, connecting Kokyo-gaien National Garden with the Imperial Palace. The gate is well-known historically for the "Incident Outside the Sakashita-mon Gate:” in 1862, the councilor of state (an important figure in Edo shogunate) was injured by a group of samurai outside this gate in an assasination attempt that ended his political career.
