On the slope north of the moat in the east Gardens of the Imperial Palace, lies the original site of the castle's keep. In the writings from the Edo period, it describes the place as the most beautiful spot to view the ocean and its waves, hence its name: Shiomizaka, meaning the tide-viewing hill. The ocean water levels unfortunately changed as did the coastline, but despite that the town grew prosperous.
