This park is located between Uchibori-dori Ave. and Hanzo-bori Moat located on the west side of The Imperial Palace. About 170 cherry trees such as the Somei Yoshino and the Yamazakura Moutain Cherry are planted in the park, so it is well known as a cherry blossom viewing spot.
Chidori-ga-fuchi Park, which opened in 1919 as part of the city ward renewal project, is about 450m long from north to south and about 20m long from east to west, forming its characteristic elongated shape. With cherry blossoms and other seasonal flowers blooming in the park, people can be seen sitting on benches and forest-bathing during the day.
The Chidori-ga-fuchi area has been known for years as a cherry blossom viewing spot, and Chidori-ga-fuchi Park is filled with many cherry blossom-viewing visitors every year. The best time to view the Somei Yoshino and the Yamazakura Mountain Cherry trees is from late March to early April, when the park's 170 cherry trees are in full bloom. From February to May, Rapeseed plants also bloom in yellow, creating a vivid contrast with the cherry blossoms.
The Chiyoda Sakura Festival is held when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. This includes night time lighting of the cherry blossoms in the nearby Chidori-ga-fuchi Greenway and special nighttime opening of the Chidori-ga-fuchi Boat Pier (the festival was canceled in 2022). During daytime hours, visitors can also take a boat ride from the Chidori-ga-fuchi Boat Pier and admire the cherry blossoms from the water. The operating days and hours are limited during cherry blossom season, so please check on the website in advance.
A short stroll is also recommened to the adjacent Kitanomaru Garden where there are about another 230 cherry trees including the Somei Yoshino, Yamazakura Moutain, and Oshima Cherry. Many historical remains are to be found in Kitanomaru Garden, so history lovers will also enjoy it there.
Visiting Chidori-ga-fuchi Park outside of spring is also lovely. You are surrounded by fresh greenery in summer, and in the fall you can enjoy the changing colors of the leaves. It is a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll on your days off. You may also enjoy going for a run in the natural environment of the park.
