“With a spacious interior, our goal is to create a bookstore where families with children can relax and enjoy”, says Mr. Kayano, the store manager of Book House Cafe. The Book House Cafe, which opened back in May 2017, is a “children’s bookstore” that comes complete with a cafe space. The store’s shelves are lined with more than 10,000 books ranging from preschool picture books to books for children in the latter years of grade school, and are designed thoughtfully to allow baby strollers to pass through easily.

On the 1st floor of the store where numerous children’s books are lined up, there is a cafe with free Wi-Fi service. Additionally, there is also an event space equipped with a grand piano on the 2nd floor.
The bestselling item at the cafe is the “Cake Set” which has different flavors every season and the “Beef & Cheese Special Curry” which is made using roux that has multiple layers of spice and flavors. In fact, this curry uses the same roux as a certain well-known restaurant Jimbocho. They also have a Kid’s Menu which includes items like “Kid’s Curry” , so you may get a meal here with your child while reading the book you just bought.

Another appeal of “Book House Cafe” is the fun events regularly held in the store. From events concerning children’s books like picture book Read-Aloud events, Book Club events, and seminars as well as talk shows by authors, to live musical performances using the classic piano set up in the store, and tap dancing performances, we have a wide variety of events. We have plenty of events that go beyond reading books and will certainly pique the curiosity of your child.

  • Mr. Kayano reflects, “I want people to feel that they will meet someone new when they come to Book House Cafe. I have even seen fateful meetings of those working on children’s books, such as authors and editors. It’s also common to see event participants become friends with one another. I believe that our children’s book niche provides fertile ground for such encounters."
  • At the far end of the 1st floor of the store, you will find yourself at a place with a totally different atmosphere compared to the rest of the store, the moody book bar Lilliput. This bar opens at 8 P.M. and the barmaid, who is none other than the owner of Book House Cafe, will sometimes read out your picture book of choice while you enjoy a drink, or so they say. Give it a go, and you may find yourself a hidden bar that is true to Jimbocho’s image. Seems like fun to get tipsy with a drink at a children’s book store after-hours.

Other than children’s books, Book House Cafe is going for various approaches, including a cafe, bar, and events to entertain customers. Do come and visit the “Book House Cafe”, which is great fun for both kids and adults.
