”Kitchen Nankai" is a restaurant famous for their curry, founded in 1966. Due to deteriorating building conditions, the first shop, the main branch closed in June 2020, to the regret of many customers. However, the "Kitchen Nakai Jimbocho Branch" opened about 3 minutes away on foot from the original location of the main store in the direction of Chiyoda-dori in July 2020. The Jimbocho Branch is run by Mr. Nakajo who was the chef at the main branch for over 20 years. This means that you can enjoy curry which has inherited the taste of the main branch here.

There are a total of 14 counter seats along the window and kitchen. At lunchtime, the restaurant is crowded and so popular that a line will form outside. Aim to arrive between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm when the restaurant is relatively less busy. Recently, it seems that many female customers can be seen dining here.

The dark, black curry sauce is synonymous with "Kitchen Nankai". This sauce features the savory umami from ingredients such as pork, onions and the flavor of 10 types of spices and has an exquisite taste. This dish has an elegant richness, moderate bitterness and a spicy aftertaste that is addictive. Mr. Nakajo says that the "Sauce is cooked and allowed to rest repeatedly, taking a total of about 10 hours to prepare. Adding mayonnaise to the sauce makes the spiciness a little milder."

  • "Kitchen Nankai's Katsu Curry (750 yen)" is said to be the origin of Katsu Curry. The cutlet that lies on a bed of white rice and shredded cabbage uses fresh bread crumbs made with slightly sweet and course butter. When fried, the thick batter stands out and is a good match with the sauce which coats the cutlet well. The balance between the crunchy batter, soft cutlet meat and the rich sauce is exquisite. All fried ingredients are made to order, so you can enjoy it freshly out of the fryer.

In addition to the signature dish "Katsu Curry", you can also choose set meals such as "Fried Halibut (Hirame) with Grilled Ginger Pork (900 yen) and "Fried Shrimp and Cream Croquette (850 yen)". After 1:00 pm, you can also add on toppings such as "chicken cutlet (300 yen)" and "fried shrimp (350 yen)" which are part of the "plus menu". Also, toppings such as "raw egg (50 yen)", "cheese (100 yen)" and "cabbage (50 yen)" can be added to Curry. Have fun enjoying customizing your meal according to your mood.

"Kitchen Nankai" has remained a such well-loved restaurant that, even now, 50 years after its establishment, you can still see customers lining up outside. Some customers have even been regular customers for over 40 years after falling in love with the taste.
