This earth-paved bridge extends over the inner moat of Imperial Palace leading to Fukiage Garden. To the north side is the Hanzo-bori Moat, and to the south side is the Sakurada-bori Moat. Hanzomon was built in 1620 and got its name from the leader of the Iga Ninja Clan, Hattori Hanzō. Along with his clan ninja, he is said to have taken control of Edo along with Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was provided with land alongside the castle, and his retainers served as the guards of this gate, the Hanzomon.
