Omura Masujiro was a military theorist born in 1824. He designed and built the first western-style warship in Japan.
He was the supreme commander of the battle for Ueno in 1856. At the age of 46, he was assasinated.
Currently, his bronze statue sculpted in 1893 stands in Yasukuni-jinja shrine. It is the oldest western-style bronze statue in Japan.
