After having studied in Britain, Togo returned to Japan in 1878 and was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in the navy. During the Sino-French war he was promoted to the rank of captain, and was eventually appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet of the Imperial Japanese Fleet during the Russo-Japanese War. He destroyed the Russian Baltic Fleet, which was considered among the strongest in the world, and rocketed to international fame. The remains of his mansion in Kojimachi, where he lived for over 60 years, are now part of Togo Park.
