This is a long-established Western-style restaurant, established in 1907, associated with the famous Japanese writer Soseki Natsume. When Mr. Iwakichi Horiguchi, the first owner of the restaurant, was the exclusive chef of Dr. Raphael von Koeber, who was teaching philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University, he prepared Tempura called "Western-style kakiage" with the available ingredients to entertain Soseki when he unexpectedly visited Koeber's house, and it is still the restaurant's specialty today.
